Lapierre commits to CWG

Lapierre had initially decided against competing but was talked into committing for the event by Australia’s Athletics Federation before he again expressed doubts about going to Delhi citing fatigue.

But the confusion finally ended on Thursday night when he confirmed his trip to the Indian capital for the October 3 to 14 event during a meet at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. “I had a bit of doubt because mentally I was tired, but I had a bit of a break and took it easy,” Lapierre was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph. “I think I can go to the Commonwealth Games and win.”
Inexperienced squad

The defending champions also named a 16-strong women’s hockey squad, including 11 debutants, for the 14 Commonwealth Games. The Australians have a remarkable CWG record, having lost just one match in the event and claimed two of the three gold medals on offer since 1998.

“Eleven of the 16 players selected will make their Commonwealth Games debut, while Nicole Arrold, Madonna Blyth, Kate Hollywood, Toni Cronk and Kobie McGurk all competed in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne,” Hockey Australia said in a statement.

The Hockeyroos finished fifth at the recent World Cup in Argentina, and strong performances from the likes of Jayde Taylor and Kate Jenner, who only made their international debuts three months ago, have seen them retain their place.
Australia will be favourites in Delhi but coach Frank Murray said England, New Zealand and hosts India are also in the running for the gold medal. “We are one of four teams who are in with a chance to win gold at the Commonwealth Games,” Murray said.

Murray said this year appeared to be the most even competition for the Commonwealth Games in its history. The team: Nicole Arrold, Madonna Blyth, Fiona Boyce, Alison Bruce, Toni Cronk, Casey Eastham, Kate Hollywood, Emily Hurtz, Kate Jenner, Fiona Johnson, Shelly Liddelow, Rachael Lynch, Kobie McGurk, Ashleigh Nelson, Megan Rivers, Jayde Taylor.
