Balakrishnan back in pool

Last Updated 21 September 2010, 17:13 IST

It was on September 5 that Balakrishnan, a member of India’s Commonwealth Games squad, was attacked by some unidentified men in his home town. He suffered bruises and an injury to his head that required five stitches.

That put his Games participation in doubt but his determination lit up the path forward for the 21-year-old backstroke specialist.  He returned to training with the Commonwealth Games squad on Saturday, even though he is yet to recover fully from the assault.

Balakrishnan said he still has pain on his head but the dream of participating in the mega event prompted him to make a quick return.

“I am still having pain in my head but CWG is big for me. So I decided to go ahead with the training.

“These things won’t pull me back from giving my best for the country,” Balakrishnan said, adding that he still was not aware of the motive behind the attack.
