Festive treat

The Bengaluru International Arts Festival 2010 (BIAF) will be held in seven different venues from September 30 to October 10.

Some of the artistes and groups who are participating are B Jayashree, a troupe from Sri Lanka, Shobana, Suramani Praveen Godkhindi, M D Pallavi and team, Advaita fusion band, Pratibha Prahlad, Unni Krishnan and Anil Srinivasan etc. The festival will also see the staging of Wedding Album directed by Lillete Dubey.

Handicraft expo

The Crafts Council Of Karnataka will be holding the release of the book Metal Crafts Of Karnataka and the inauguration of Vastrabharana 2010 on October 1, 10 am at Chitrakala Parishat.

Vastrabharana will showcase handicraft and handloom products from across the country.
The products will include textiles and jewellery. The exhibition will be on till October 6 and the timing is 10.30 am to 7.30 pm.

‘Prakruthi Vaibhava’

Prakruthi VaibhavaVrikhsa, the Bonsai Study Circle, is presenting Prakruthi Vaibhava, an exhibition of Bonsai, Saikei and Suiseki as part of their 20th anniversary celebrations at Chitrakala Parishat on September 25 and 26.

Ashish Khokar’s monthly Dance DISCourse will be held at the Alliance Française on September 25, 6.30 pm.

There will be a screening of Uday Shankar’s classic film Kalpana followed

Cultural contest

Sama Trust, J P Nagar, is holding the M R Vijayalakshmi Memorial Music, Art and Cultural Contest on November 21. The contest is for children from Montessori to 12th standard.

‘The Endellions’

The International Music and Art Society is presenting the The Endellion String Quartet from the UK on September 29, 7.30 pm at the Crystal Ballroom, The Grand Magrath Hotel.
 The Endellions as they are known, are famous for their playing of the Beethoven

The band members are Andrew Watkinson and Ralph D’Souza on violin; Garfield Jackson on viola and David Waterman on cello.

In concert

M A Narasimhachar Music Foundation is organising a music concert on September 24, 5.45 pm at The Indian Institute of World Culture, B P Wadia Road, Basavanagudi. On the occasion, there will be a Carnatic vocal concert by Karthik Hebbar.

He will be accompanied on violin by Shankar Raman and on mridangam by B S Anand.

Hindustani recital

Sapthaswara Academy’s 76th grand monthly chamber music programme will be held on September 28, 6.45 pm at the residence of K Gopalan, 4/2, Malleswara Mansion, 6th Main (between 6th and and 7th Cross), Malleswaram.

The artistes who will participate are Abhijit Shenoy, K (Hindustani vocal), Ashwin Walawalkar (harmonium) and Adarsh Shenoy K (tabla).

‘Sangeeta Sanje’

Rama Kala Vedike is holding Sangeeta Sanje, which will feature Hindustani vocal recital by Anupama (Gudi) Mangalvede (daughter and disciple of Pt Madhav Gudi) on September 28, 6.30 pm.

This will be followed by a flute recital by Shaktidhar V R. The accompanying artistes are Kiran Yavagal and Vikas Naregal on tabla and Venkatesh Kumar Alkod on the harmonium. The venue is Ananya Sabhangana, GML Cultural Academy, 91/2, 4th Main Malleswaram.

High notes

William Joseph Music Foundation will be opening their mini-concert hall-cum-resource centre at their Academy.

On the occasion, a mini-concert by seven music schools from across the country will be held there.

Classical strains

The annual Hindustani classical music festival — 7th Dhwani BKF Pt Mallikarjun Mansur Hindustani Music Festival will be held on September 25 and 26 at the JSS Auditorium, 8th Block, Jayanagar. On September 25, Samanwaya Sarkar will play the sitar and Debabpriya Adhikary will present a vocal recital from 6 pm to 7.45 pm.

Vocal touch

Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy and Ananya will present a vocal recital by G Ravikiran and party on September 25, 6 pm.

Nada Vijnana Sampada, written by K Varadarangan, will be released on
the occasion.

‘Allied Ragas’

Allied Ragas-5, a thematic music programme series on ragas Shahana, Malavi and Dvijavanti, will be presented by D Balakrishna on September 26, 10 am at Ananya Sabhangana, Malleswaram. He will be accompanied by A Renukaprasad on mridangam.

Jazz night

Jazz diva Sonia Saigal and Harmeet Manseta will play laidback tunes from the early 40s in an evening dedicated to classic jazz at Not Just Monday Night Jazz at Olive Beach on September 26, 8 pm.

‘Kiraanaa Gharana’

Kiraanaa Music Academy, in association with Sunaada Art Foundation, has organised a music concert on September 26, where artistes from Kiraanaa Gharana will present ragas of the rainy season.  Artistes performing are mainly from the Pt Bhimsen Joshi lineage and include Madhava Gudi, Govinda Rotti, Nagaraja Rao Havaldar and Raghavendra Gudi.
The programme is going to be held at Kannada Sahitya Parishath auditorium in Chamarajapet, starting 4 pm.

‘Humari Awaaz’

Humari Awaaz, a musical evening by the Bangalore Music Academy, in aid of SICHREM, will be held on September 25, 6 pm, at St Joseph’s Indian High School Auditorium, next to Mallya Hospital.

On violin

Bangalore International Centre is holding a violin performance by Charumathi Raghuraman on October 1, 6.30 pm.  

The ‘Galeej Gurus’ will perform live at the Hard Rock Café, St Mark’s Road on September 23, 8.30 pm. The members of the band are Nathan Lee Harris (singer, song-writer, lyricist), Matthew Harris (bass guitar), Ananth Menon (guitars/vocals, Naveen Thomas Joseph (guitars) and Kishan Balaji (drums)



The 9th Rev Dr Stanley Samartha Memorial Lecture, organised by the Bangalore Initiative for Religious Dialogue (BIRD), will be delivered by Sir Mark Tully on October 7, 5 pm at the Rotary House of Friendship, Lavelle Road.


Gitanjali, the Heritage Festival, is being organised by the Bengali Association at Gayathri Vihar, Palace Grounds from October 10 to 17.

Expressive: Sohni KaranthNritya Chilume 7’

Ananya is organising Nritya Chilume 7, a platform for budding talents.

There will be Bharatanatyam recitals by Shibani Ashok, Aishwarya, A Revankar, Shivani Shivakumar and kathak by Sohini Karanth on September 24, from 6 pm. The venue is Seva Sadan, Malleswaram.

Actress Shobhana will be performing Bharatanatyam at Bengaluru International Arts Festival.


Contemporary work

Veda Art Gallery is hosting Song of India, a collection of Indian contemporary art at No 1, Kumara Park, next to BDA. The exhibition will be from 11 am to 6 pm till October 8.


Right Lines Art Gallery is holding an exhibition of paintings by Arpita Basu till October 2.
The gallery is located at 270,1st floor,1st Main, Defence Colony, Indiranagar. The show is on from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm.

Magnitude Gallery is presenting The Zodiac Ganesha Series at No. 140/13, 27th Cross, III Block, Jayanagar all this month, from 10 am to 8 pm.

Magnified colours

The Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum presents This too shall pass by Sudarshan Shetty at Galleryske, 2 Berlie Street, Langford Town.

The Header and Footer Club (HAFC) of IISc will perform an English comedy called Safar at K H Kalasoudha on September 25 and 26, 6 pm. Safar is a satirical take on the apathy against initiatives.

Hindi play

Gillo, a theatre group, will stage a Hindi play Suar Chala Space Ko, for children at Ranga Shankara on September 25, 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm and on September 26, 3 pm and 6 pm at MES K K Public School, Vidyaranyapura. For details, call 9886924362.


Indian Ensemble will present Rizwaan, a play in Hindustani and English, based on Agha Shahid Ali’s collection of poems The country without a post office at Ranga Shankara. The play is written and directed by Abhishek Majumdar. On October 9, the play will be held at 7.30 pm. It will be staged on October 10, 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm.
