Beauty is serious business

O ne look at history, and literature will reveal the fact nature and women, nature and romance have been inspiration to finest of the poetry and writings. Wars were waged too, over beautiful women and wealth. Scientists were astonished to unearth some beauty secrets of women, safely locked underneath the earth and since thousands of years, in form of mummies.

Today, for the modern woman, beauty is something that is found through allowing herself to be pampered, whether it is at the beauty parlour or salon. And, beauty today, has become serious business, providing for many families and adding self confidence to women’s persona — of both entrepreneurs and their customers. It may be difficult to find a road sans beauty parlours, thanks to the beauticians cashing in on women’s unbridled enthusiasm to dress up aptly for various occasions. What started with handful of beauty parlours, today grown manifold assuming the name of ‘Mysore District Beauticians Association’. The association completes a decade of its existence this year.

Secretary of the association, Veda Rai told City Herald, in all 280 beauticians comprising Mysore, Mandya, Kodagu districts and Kollegal taluk have registered with them. The members of the association possess license for the job, that is most important, when women without licenses have been taking up the profession.

As part of its various activities, the association has been hosting events every alternative year, besides taking active part in community projects too. On September 25 at 5.30 pm onwards, MMC Platinum Jubilee hall at J K Grounds in the city, will be setting the stage for competitions like ‘Miss Elegant’, ‘Mr Elegant’ and ‘Lady Elegant’. The first category of the contests (Miss...) is open for those in the age group of 18 to 24 years, while the second is open for 21 to 40 years and the third for 25 to 35 years. Peri.in and Mr Idli restaurants and BGS Apollo Hospitals are the main sponsors.

Veda Rai said, it is a tough nut to crack with expert jury adjudging the winners based on their very appearance, accessories, hair, chin and other features. The one who stands out in the crowd can find his or her way to prize. In the previous contest held in 2008, highest of 37 had vied for ‘Miss Elegant’ title alone, while Mr.. had seen 33 entries and lady-15. This year too, the entries are encouraging. Film actors Jayamala and Yash are among the chief guests. Most of the proceedings of the competitions will be spent on service projects like sponsoring the requirements at a government school at Kumbarakoppal in Mysore, besides another at Mandya. A member who recently lost her husband and in need of assistance will also be receiving aid, such is the way association reaches out to help each other, said Veda Rai.

Zerine is the president of the association, ably assisted by Sujatha Singh as vice-president, Veda Rai-secretary, Padma Ponnappa-joint secretary, Bharathi R Swamy-treasurer, Sheela P-joint treasurer and Sabeena-PRO. The executive committee has Shantha Gowda, Shantha Kumari, Anitha Bharath and Uma Jadhav.
