JOIN USOut of the five rivers in Dakshina Kannada district, Netravathi, Kumaradhara, Phalguni, Shambhavi and Nandini, all four except Phalguni, are in spate, said Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil.
He said that the confluence of Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers at Uppinangady near Sahasralingeshwara Temple has reached the level of 31 meters on Tuesday. The previously known highest level of the confluence was 32 metres, in 2013.
Nethravathi river is at 8.6 meters in Bantwal and 29.6 metres in Uppinangady, while Kumaradhara in Puttur is at 25 meters.
River Payaswini in Subrahmanya too is in full flow. As there are possibilities of flash floods in areas in proximity of Nandini and Shambhavi rivers, the people in the region have been cautioned. Also, people visiting the confluence points should maintain extreme caution.
People in low lying areas in Bantwal and Uppinangady have been relocated as a precautionary measure. People in other low lying areas in the district should move to safer areas, said the DC and added that there is no need for panic.
The district administration has set up a response system. District level officers are deployed in low lying areas. An NDRF team will reach the district by Wednesday morning.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. Also, people should not go near drains and canals. The body of a person named Bommaiah, who was 64 years was recovered on Tuesday, he said.
The DC said that taluk level officials are delegated to declare a holiday for schools depending on the rain condition in their respective regions. Parents should take due caution and may decide either to send or not send their wards to schools, as the safety of children is important.
Charmadi and Shiradi Ghats are open. Work of clearing debris on Sampaje Road is in progress.
