A group of children are racing across a playground. One is inventing rules for a game that did not exist five minutes ago. Another is balancing on a low wall, trying not to touch the ground. Interestingly, humans are not the only creatures that play. Scientists have observed playful behaviour in dolphins, wolves, elephants, ravens and many other animals. Young lion cubs wrestle with one another. Dolphins chase objects through the water. Ravens slide down snowy rooftops and repeat the activity for no obvious reason other than enjoyment.

Why would animals spend energy on activities that appear unnecessary?

Researchers believe play helps young animals practise skills they may need later in life. Through chasing, wrestling and exploring, they learn coordination, social behaviour and problem-solving. In other words, play prepares them for future challenges.

The human brain seems to work in a similar way. Play creates a safe environment for experimentation. Children can make mistakes without serious consequences. They can test ideas, learn from failure and try again. This freedom encourages confidence and resilience.

Modern technology has introduced new forms of play, from video games to virtual worlds. Some digital games can improve reaction times, spatial awareness and strategic thinking. However, experts generally agree that a healthy balance is important. Physical activity, imaginative play and face-to-face interaction provide benefits that screens alone cannot replace.

Perhaps the most surprising discovery is that play remains important throughout life. Adults who engage in hobbies, sports, puzzles and creative activities continue to challenge their brains. Play can reduce stress, improve mood and support lifelong learning.

This suggests that play is not something people outgrow. It is a natural part of how humans think, learn and connect with others.

So the next time someone says, "Stop playing and get serious," remember this: play is serious business for the brain. Whether you are kicking a ball, solving a puzzle, building a model or inventing an imaginary adventure, your brain is strengthening connections, testing ideas and learning new skills.

Far from being wasted time, play may be one of the smartest things a brain can do.
