How stalks keep you strong

Edible stems deserve a place on your plate.

They may look plain, but stalks are some of the most hard-working vegetables on your plate. From the crisp snap of celery to the soft crunch of asparagus, edible stalks are packed with water, fibre, and minerals that refresh and strengthen the body. Think of them as nature’s built-in health straws — drawing nutrients from the soil and passing some of that goodness on to us.

Celery is 95% water
That’s why it feels instantly cooling and crunchy — like eating nature’s own hydration stick.

Celery is rich in natural electrolytes, helping to replace salts lost through sweat — a reason athletes once munched on it after training. Sugarcane, another edible stalk, offers quick energy. Its natural sugars are balanced with small amounts of iron, magnesium, and antioxidants, making fresh sugarcane juice far better than any fizzy drink.

Asparagus makes your gut happy
Its prebiotic fibre feeds the good bacteria in your intestines, improving digestion and immunity.

Asparagus, a spring favourite, is full of folate and vitamin K, which support blood and bone health. It also contains prebiotic fibre — food for the “good bacteria” in your gut. Even lemongrass, often used just for its aroma, has hidden benefits. It aids digestion and adds a refreshing citrusy lift to soups and teas.

Lemongrass helps you relax
It’s often brewed into tea because its natural oils calm the mind and ease digestion.

Stalks are also low in calories but high in texture, making them perfect for healthy snacking or light meals. You can slice celery into sticks for hummus, sauté tender asparagus with olive oil, or blend sugarcane and mint for a natural energy drink. They add crunch, freshness, and subtle sweetness — proof that even the simplest plant parts can make food feel alive.
