On June 12, the world marks the World Day Against Child Labour — a day to remind us that millions of children around the globe are not in classrooms or playgrounds. Instead, they’re working long hours in factories, fields, or workshops.According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), around 160 million children worldwide are involved in child labour — that’s nearly 1 in 10. Many work in harsh or unsafe conditions, and miss out on their right to education, rest, and childhood. Some of the everyday items we use — footballs, bangles, carpets, and even parts of smartphones or fast fashion — may have passed through the hands of a child worker. These children often work quietly, behind the scenes, with little recognition or protection. This year, the message is simple: every child deserves a life free from labour. A life with learning, laughter, and play.So what can we do?Start by becoming aware. Ask where things come from. Support brands and organisations that value fair treatment and responsible production. Share what you learn with friends and teachers.Because behind every product is a story — and we all have the power to make sure that story begins with opportunity, not exploitation.
