Karnataka is charting a bold path to become a national leader in school education by embracing a holistic, inclusive, and student-centric vision. Genuine educational excellence, I believe, is achieved not through rigid competition, but by fostering empathy, innovation, and collaboration across the system. At the core of this transformation is the class teacher or mentor, envisioned as a second parent — someone who not only guides learning but also nurtures emotional well-being. A strong student–teacher bond built on trust, care, and mutual respect helps students feel safe, motivated, and seen. Moving away from outdated disciplinary toughness, the focus is shifting toward empathy and personalised support.Inclusiveness plays a key roleEvery child, regardless of background, deserves equal access to resources, opportunities, and a voice in their learning journey. This means better infrastructure, digital access, and targeted support, especially in underserved communities.Equally important is ending the unfair competition among teachers. Collaborative leadership, peer mentorship, and professional growth must replace rivalry. When teachers grow together, students benefit from richer, more cohesive learning environments.Karnataka’s roadmap also calls for dismantling subject and language hierarchies. All disciplines — from science and maths to arts and languages — must be treated with equal respect, allowing students to explore their interests and develop multiple intelligences.Above all, teaching must never be monotonous. Classrooms should be vibrant spaces of curiosity and joy, blending modern technology, interactive methods, and real-world relevance. By cultivating peer support, creativity, and emotional intelligence alongside academic rigour, Karnataka will empower its students to shine not only in board exams but also as confident, compassionate individuals ready to shape the future. This is not just about topping the charts — it is about transforming lives..The author is an Indian Talent Olympiad Best Teacher 2025 awardee.
