What your body needs during exams — not just your brain

Sharp thinking starts with simple care.
What your body needs during exams — not just your brain

Exams are often seen as a test of the brain — memory, focus, logic, speed. But what we forget is that your brain is part of your body. And if your body isn’t taken care of, your thinking can’t perform at its best.

Start with sleep. It’s not a luxury — it’s your brain’s reset button. During sleep, your brain stores everything you’ve revised. Even one night of poor sleep can make you slower, more distracted, and more anxious the next day.

Then there’s water. Your brain is nearly 75% water. Even mild dehydration can affect memory and mood. Keep a bottle nearby and sip regularly — not just during the exam, but throughout your prep.

Food plays a big role too. While junk food gives a short energy boost, it crashes quickly. Choose brain-friendly snacks like bananas, eggs, nuts, curd, or dark chocolate. A light, balanced breakfast can do more for your performance than any last-minute revision.

Posture matters. Sitting hunched or still for hours can make you feel sleepy, tired, or even anxious. Get up and stretch between sessions. Move your neck. Roll your shoulders. A short walk or a few deep breaths can reboot your energy.

Your brain may be in charge during exams, but your body is the engine that powers it. Treat it well, and you’ll think more clearly, stay more balanced, and perform at your true potential — no matter how tough the paper is.
