The impact of colours on decor is well-recognized and they can be used effectively to create the desired mood in the entire space. From sombre, to warm and intimate, to serene and calming, the choice of the right colours, and in the right amount, can transform any room and create the ambience you want. Colours have an emotional and psychological bearing on you, and therefore how you use colours in your immediate environment has an effect on your overall sense of well-being.

Strike the right note

For instance, bright vibrant colours spell vitality, while subdued shades can have a quieting effect. However, an over profusion of certain colours can have the opposite impact, such as yellow that usually reminds one of sunshine and cheer, can have an overwhelming effect if there is too much of it. In this context, colours in artworks can be an effective way to add accents that can contribute immensely to striking the right note in a room. It is best to have neutral backgrounds and pastel wall colours which will allow colours in the artwork to stand out and create a prominent mark.

Reds for festive cheer

To add a festive or celebratory air, bright reds, orange and purple, even when used in sparse quantities, can alter the space. Therefore, when used wisely, along with harmonising thematic components, colour accents in artworks can be invigorating, optimistic, passionate, restful or calm and tranquil.

Shades and effect

Keeping in mind the functionality of the space, you can use colour accents that complement the purpose. In case this is for personal spaces, it is best to be cognizant of how you relate and respond to a certain colour, since shades and tones of the same colour can evoke a range of responses in different people.

In general, blue, as in the colour of water or the sky, tends to remind you of clear calming waters, distant horizons and open skies. Since there are many shades of blue, it is important to find one that resonates with you on an individual level and has a calming effect. Similarly, green is reminiscent of Nature and is a highly versatile colour - it can add warmth, bring the Nature in and have a restful quality to it.

Universally, white is considered to be a symbol of purity and is a fairly neutral colour, which allows other colours and accents to take precedence and get highlighted. In art, it can be comforting, give a minimal feel and also contribute to an elegant look to the space. In contrast, red is intense and passionate, and fundamentally great for accent with its sheer energy and uplifting effect. It can also work to create a sense of drama and be a conversation piece in any room.

When used judiciously, colour accents through artwork can truly transform the decor and create the desired mood for an interior space.
