Shopping for the right carpet can be daunting. Jayanthi Madhukar has some tips to help you get one that does more than what it’s intended to

Finding the perfect rug is like love at first sight. It captivates you instantly, but practical considerations like size and budget often pose obstacles. You may discover that the rug you adore is too small for your space or susceptible to wear and tear from foot traffic. Dust accumulation could also be a concern. Shopping for the ideal rug comes with its unique set of challenges.

In light of this, we present some practical suggestions to assist you.

Space it right

In smaller rooms enclosed by walls or doorways, a single large rug can work wonders. According to designers, by covering the entire floor space, this rug creates an illusion of openness. So, if you have limited space, opt for a larger rug. Conversely, in larger rooms, layering multiple rugs can achieve a striking effect.

Layering for the right look

Instead of seeking a single perfect rug, consider layering smaller area rugs. Keerthana Shankar bought an apartment recently. She says, “Finding the right carpet for our long living room seemed like a lost cause. However, during one shopping expedition, a salesperson suggested I consider buying two smaller rugs. This turned out to be both cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing”.

Keerthana purchased a larger plain carpet made of water hyacinth fiber and arranged her furniture around it. She then placed a smaller Persian carpet at the center of this arrangement. “The Persian carpet acts as the perfect anchor, creating a luxurious ambiance, especially with a contemporary coffee table placed on it”, she explains.

Pattern or plain?

Boldly-patterned rugs make a strong statement that’s loud and decisive. To ensure a patterned rug harmonizes with the space, it’s advisable to make it the defining feature of the room. This means the rest of the room should exhibit subtlety, allowing the rug to stand out effortlessly.

Conversely, a plain rug can serve as an anchor in an eclectic decor. It can also make a strong statement by highlighting specific colour combinations. For instance, a solid black rug can create a striking effect in a black-and-white themed decor. Solid, plain-coloured rugs in various shades, from yellows to reds, can complement an overall white decor.

Feel the material

The choice of rug material depends on the purpose and location within your home. For lounging areas like entertainment rooms or living rooms, soft materials are often preferred. Wool rugs are popular in formal areas, as they offer a range of looks, from soft, thick piles to thin flat weaves and fluffy hand-knotted rugs.

Cotton rugs work well as area rugs in bedrooms and in front of classic furniture, such as lounge chairs. Silk carpets, on the other hand, are delicate showpieces that should be placed in low-traffic areas, as they are prone to spills and wear and tear. Natural fibers like coir and water hyacinth provide an excellent base for layered looks or minimalist decor.

For high-traffic areas and households with children and pets, synthetic rugs made with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) offer both softness and durability, making them a practical choice.

Shopping for the perfect rug may seem like a daunting task, but with these practical tips in mind, you can navigate the process with ease. Remember to consider the size, layering options, patterns, and materials that best suit your space and lifestyle. Happy rug hunting!
