BJP govt provided banking services to poor, says Modi

Last Updated 21 September 2018, 11:47 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Congress was not able to introduce banking facilities to poor despite ruling the country for seven decades.

Addressing a huge political rally organised at MGM Grounds here on Tuesday, he said the BJP government at the Centre provided banking services to the poor and helped them join the mainstream of the society.

Under Jan Dhan Yojana, the poor were told to open zero balance accounts, he added.

Lauding the pioneering efforts made in banking sector in Udupi, the prime minister said that his government started the plans to bring in all the poor into the banking system.

Under the Pradhan Mantri’s Mudra Yojana, 12 crore loan has been accepted in the country and in Karnataka, it is just 1.25 crore, he claimed.

He charged that the Congress government in the state delayed various infrastructure projects of the Centre and said, “blocking (atkana), keeping things hanging (latkana) and wandering (bhatkana) is their nature”. The Congress governments earlier allowed a handful of people to loot banks, but denied loans to the youths, farmers and the poor, he alleged.

Modi also elaborated on various programmes implemented by his government for the benefit of fishermen, like
Blue Revolution and Sagarmala.

He said his government is responsible in promulgating an ordinance to pave the way for providing stringent punishment, including the death penalty for those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years. The prime minister maintained that the High Court of Karnataka was compelled to interfere and restrict the Congress-led state government when the sand mafia was active with the support of the government.

He mentioned about the long-pending Kadur-Chikkamagaluru-Sakleshpur railway project, which was given green signal after BJP took over at the Centre.

He also spoke about Bharatmala, a new umbrella programme for the highway sector, that focuses on optimising efficiency of freight and passenger movement.

He charged that the Congress is experiencing defeat after defeat and Karnataka will prove the last leg of the humiliation for Congress, wherein Mahatma Gandhi’s dream will be materialised with Congress destruction.
