Heavy rain damages houses, road in DK

Heavy rain coupled with lightning and thunder lashed different parts of Dakshina Kannada, on Sunday night.

The lightning has damaged the electrical items in several houses in the district. The lightning abruptly ended the IPL Fan Park, at Nehru Maidan on Sunday night.

A CAR constable suffered injuries when lightning struck him, at Nehru Maidan. The injured is Siddappaji and is recuperating in a hospital.

Road collapses

The road connecting Hosmata bridge built across Gundya stream partially collapsed, following heavy rain on Monday morning. Hosmata bridge is considered as submerging bridge during monsoon. The work on the new bridge is in progress.

Water flowed beside the old bridge. Following heavy rain in the last few days, the road collapsed partially. Later, the contractor of the new bridge facilitated the movement of vehicles by dumping a few stone slabs on the road.

The partial collapse of the road disrupted the movement of vehicles on the stretch between Uppinangady-Subrahmanya state highway for two hours.

A compound wall fell on a parked jeep, near Chandranatha Swamy Basadi in Vittal on Sunday night. The jeep belongs to Dinesh Gowda of Vitla Mudnoor.

Without proper stormwater drains, the rainwater flowed on road at Pumpwell and Thokkottu where the work on flyover is in progress.

A compound wall of Government Higher Primary School collapsed at Guthigaru on Sunday night. The compound wall was constructed at a cost of Rs 3 lakh recently.

The house of Someshwar Gram Panchayat Vice President Sushila S Naik was damaged after lightning struck the house, at Krishna Nagara second cross in Kumpala. The lightning had struck the terrace of the house. All the electronic goods have been damaged in the house.

Man killed

A construction labourer died after lightning struck him at Sarolikere in Nelyadi on Sunday night.

The deceased is Peter D’Souza (38). The mishap occurred when he was sitting on a chair beside the window. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he breathed his last.

The lightning also damaged the house of Nelyadi GP member Florin D’Souza. The wall of the house has developed cracks and electric wires have been damaged.

In the last 24 hours, the district has received an average of 49.8 mm rainfall. This includes 59.1 mm rain in Belthangady, 56 mm in Sullia, 53.1 mm in Puttur, 40.7 mm in Bantwal and 39.9 mm in Mangaluru.

The water-level in river Nethravathi and Kumaradhara has increased.
