Former MLA and Congress candidate Gopal Bhandary filed his nomination papers for the Karkala Assembly constituency on Friday. He filed his papers at the Mini Vidhana Soudha at the taluk office, in Karkala.

After filing the nomination, the former MLA said that he is deeply hurt by the dissidence in the party against his candidature.

He said he is only worried about the developments that are taking place in the constituency and added that he would surely not have any sort of personal enmity against the people who opposed him.

He said he has been actively taking part in all party building measures which are aimed at strengthening the party in the constituency. “There is no meaning in destroying the career of others and I am not into it’, he reiterated and lamented that he never expected that his own people would try to stab him in such a bad way. He expressed sadness over the incidents of burning his effigy in the constituency. He said that he is serving the people in his constituency.

“I am an indispensable part of the party and I have struggled right from the grassroots level to ensure that Congress grows in all possible ways. The dissent is not uncommon and the veteran party leaders would surely try to sort out the differences and the problems would be solved at the earliest,” he said.

He said that public in the Assembly constituency are fed up with BJP and are aspiring for change. In the backdrop of this, his victory would be sure against his opponent BJPs candidate and sitting MLA Sunil Kumar. He said he has defeated Kumar in the past and the present election would be nothing different. He also added that most probably he would not be contesting anymore and the present being the last one, he would not leave any stone unturned to ensure his victory. “BJP has spoilt the harmony in the constituency,” he said. He ridiculed the BJP and its candidate for using false facts of implementation of the recommendations made in the Kasturirangan report and Tiger project by the Congress as a poll issue to misguide the people.

He said all those fake agendas would not work. He expressed his gratitude to former chief minister Veerappa Moily for supporting him in every phase of his political life. He also expressed gratitude for the voters in the Assembly constituency for the affection they showered on him.

Gopal Bhandary had won in the 2008 Assembly elections against BJP candidate Sunil Kumar. He defeated him in the 2013 Assembly elections.
