JD(S)-BJP ‘truck’ may spoil chances of CM, son

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Dr Yathindra

The leaders of the JD(S) and the BJP seem to have joined hands to defeat the father-son duo of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Dr Yathindra in their respective Chamundeshwari and Varuna Assembly constituencies in the elections scheduled for May 12.

An RSS functionary Gopal Rao has been fielded in Chamundeshwari, while a similar activist Thotadappa Basavaraju is the BJP candidate in Varuna.

According to sources, the understanding between the JD(S) and the BJP in Mysuru in the local bodies, such as Zilla Panchayat, Mysuru Taluk Panchayat, Mysuru City Corporation and Hunsur Town Municipal Council to keep the Congress away from power, would extend up to the Assembly constituencies.

Tacit understanding

“The understanding will continue in Chamundeshwari and Varuna and a few more constituencies in the region. As the JD(S) is a bit stronger in the region, compared to the BJP, the latter will play a second fiddle. The BJP will support the JD(S) candidates in a few constituencies, including the ‘father-son’ constituencies, where the JD(S) has more chances of a victory under prevailing conditions. The JD(S) will reciprocate in a few constituencies to facilitate the victory of the BJP,” sources said.

A JD(S) leader said, the party candidate in Chamundeshwari, MLA G T Devegowda, who is a father-figure for both JD(S) and BJP leaders in the region, has already proved that he is strong enough to take on the chief minister. “In fact, all the victories of Siddaramaiah from 1983 up to 2004 can be attributed to the hard work of Devegowda. He is capable of planning, organising and executing his victory all alone. But, still the BJP leaders will do their mite to facilitate Devegowda’s victory,” he said.

Another JD(S) leader said, in Varuna, the present constituency of Siddaramaiah, where his son Dr Yathindra is contesting, there have been unprecedented developments over the past three weeks, due to various reasons.

“Under present conditions, the BJP leaders would support JD(S) candidate Abhishek S Manegar, a political novice. A powerful pontiff of an influential religious institution of the region is backing his candidature and leaders of both the parties have come to an understanding to ensure his victory. The Congress leaders may be aware of our plans. So, they are going all out to woo the voters in the two constituencies. We are also leaving no stone unturned to counter their strategies,” he said.
