MLA Jagadish Shettar stated that people have taught a lesson to those who tried to divide the society by raising Lingayat independent religion issue, and they are now talking about starting a legal battle.

"Union Government returned the proposal for Lingayat independent religion to the State Government, because it had no base, and it was politically-motivated, while there is no provision in the Constitute to declare a new religion," he said.

Shettar told media persons here on Thursday that Lingayat issue was the brainchild of former chief minister Siddaramaiah, to divide the society for electoral politics. If legal battle had to be waged, it should have started then itself, and what was the need for holding rallies. Lingayats and Veerashaivas are always united, and people know that they are same, he noted.

On Gauri murder

Statements of family members of a man arrested in connection with Gauri Lankesh murder case have put a question mark on the investigation by the SIT. The SIT should ensure that action should be taken against the guilty only, while innocent should not be troubled, Shetar said.

He also noted that the allegation about the BJP's involvement in this murder case was baseless.
