<p>The course has been introduced by the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI), New Delhi in 2009, to meet the need for second-level accountants. <br /><br />The course has been designed to prepare candidates to be assistants to professionals like Chartered Accountants, Cost Accountants, Certified Company Secretaries, Tax Practitioners, etc. <br /><br />The course is open to all streams of 10+2 (Arts, Science, and Commerce etc). The duration of the course is one year. Degree holders may also take up this course. <br /><br />However, they are exempted from giving the foundation-level test. Those working in any organisation specified in Clause I in the functional areas given in Clause -2, are exempted from practical training of six months. <br /><br />The course is taught through oral coaching, practical training, computer training and an orientation programme. Examinations are held twice a year, in June and December. The cutoff date for registration to the foundation course is June 26. Prospectus and application forms can be obtained by paying Rs 50 from the Head Office/Regional Offices/ regional chapters of the ICWAI/Recognised Oral Coaching Centres (ROCCs) of CAT Course. Duly-filled applications along with proof of education and age, should be submitted to the ROCCs.<br /><br />CAT-l course fee (both entry level and competency level) is Rs 8,600. However, for direct admission to the competency level, the course fee is Rs 6,500. Fee includes registration, tuition, computer training, training and study material. <br /><br />In addition, the candidate has to pay an orientation fee of Rs 500 at the time of joining. The course fee has to paid in the form of a Demand Draft payable at New-Delhi. All registered students will receive study material free of cost, including those who have registered for oral coaching. It is advised that students refer to other text books too.<br /><br />Subjects of study <br />Students have to study the following subjects. Each subject carries 100 marks and the examination is of three hours duration.<br /><br />*Foundation Course (Entry Level – Part-I)<br />Paper 1: Organisation and Management Fundamentals.<br />Paper 2: Accounting<br />Paper 3: Economics and Business Fundamentals<br />Paper 4: Business Mathematics and Statistics Fundamentals<br />*Competency Level – Part-II<br />Paper 5: Financial Accounting<br />Paper 7A: Applied Statutory Compliance<br />The question paper will be in multiple choice format (Fill in the blanks, true/false, preparation of simple statements, accounts). The minimum percentage of marks for passing the examination is 40 per cent on each paper and the aggregate score should be 50 per cent of the total marks, applicable to both entry-level and competency level.<br /><br />Coaching<br />A student enrolled for CAT course has to undergo oral coaching in a Regional Council or Chapter or Recognised Oral Coaching Centres where he has been admitted for CAT coaching. The objective of oral coaching is to equip the student with certain skills and understand the papers covered in the course. The minimum session of coaching for each subject (6 subjects) is 20 (each session is a 2-hour lecture).<br /><br />Every registered student of the CAT course is required to undergo practical training for a period of six months after appearing for the Foundation course.<br /><br />Computer training is compulsory for a period of 60 hours on Accounting Software, Windows etc. — given by the Regional Council/ Authorised/ Recognised Institutes of Computer Training.<br /><br />A student needs to undergo Orientation Training Programme for a period of 15 days at a Regional Council or Chapter or Recognised Oral Coaching Centre. The objective of a training programme is to equip the candidate with specific knowledge in Accounting, Taxation, Returns, and Filings, etc. The Orientation Training Fee of Rs 500 must be remitted by the candidate.<br /><br />The examination is conducted by ICWAI-recognised centres throughout the country. In Karnataka, examinations will be held in Bangalore (Two centres), Mangalore and Mysore. Examinations can be in English and Hindi.
