Explanation: Woolf argues that the power of mind is far greater than the limitations of society. People in power could lock up a library or withhold the tools of learning from reaching ordinary people, however, external authority cannot limit the creative spirit of one’s mind. One cannot prevent a mind from thinking, imagining or creating.

Context of the writer: The popular quote has been borrowed from Woolf’s famous ‘A Room of One’s Own’, published in 1929. Through her fictional character as Shakespeare’s sister, Woolf delved into cultural, economical and educational limitations within the patriarchal society which prevent women from reaching their creative potential.

At the time Woolf was holding the pen, only a few women novelists had the creative autonomy to write under their name. She questioned how women were asked to read from men’s point of view and were asked to adopt the same literary principles as passed on by their male counterparts. 

Through her work, she suggested that language was gendered and there wasn’t much literary space or words which could accurately describe some of woman's deeply felt experiences. Even a woman was short of words and used male dominated vocabulary to voice her feelings. 

About the author: Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English novelist, essayist and biographer. 

Born to a middle class English family, she was primarily educated by private tutors at home. Her life was marked by a series of unfortunate events like deaths in family and her frail mental health.

She was allowed an uncensored access to her father’s library and aspired to be a writer.

While her personal life was full of challenges, her position in the literary realm was pivotal. Her writings revolutionised 20th century literature, shifting focus from an external life to internal consciousness. 

She also had a notable influence on the feminist movement, particularly second wave where her ideas spoke for women’s intellectual freedom.
