Assam Assembly Elections 2026 | 817 candidates file nominations for 126 seats, scrutiny on March 24

A total of 817 candidates have filed nominations to contest the elections for the 126 member Assembly in Assam, polling for which is scheduled on April 9.

Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam on Monday evening said the total number of nominations, however, stood at 1,390 as candidates filed multiple nomination papers in several constituencies.

Monday was the last day for filing of nomination papers, the scrutiny of which will be conducted on Tuesday. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 26.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi (Jorhat) and Mira Borthakur (Dispur) minister Jayanta Malla Baruah (Nalbari) and Pradyut Bordoloi (Dispur) are among the prominent candidates, who filed their nominations on March 23. BJP said 66 of its candidates filed their nominations on Monday.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who filed his nominations on March 20, took part in a road show in his constituency, Jalukbari in Guwahatn on Monday evening, in which he exuded confidence about forming government for the third straight term. Several candidates of AGP and BPF, allies of BJP filed their nominations.

Gaurav, after filing his nomination in Jorhat, said people have decided to oust Himanta Biswa Sarma government due to its corruption, spreading hate among people and failure to fulfill the pre-poll promises. Several candidates of Congress's ally, Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad, also filed their nominations on Monday.
