PM called me, expressed anguish over West Bengal's law and order situation: Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar

Four people were killed in alleged clashes between TMC and BJP supporters in Burdwan district on Sunday and Monday, officials said

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called him expressing concern over the law and order situation in the state following incidents of post-poll violence. Tagging Trinamool Congress chief (TMC) Mamata Banerjee in the tweet, the Governor said that he shared his concern with the Prime Minister’s office on unabated violence and killings in the state.

“PM called and expressed his serious anguish and concern at the alarmingly worrisome law & order situation @MamataOfficial I share grave concerns @PMOIndia given that violence vandalism, arson. loot and killings continue unabated. Concerned must act in overdrive to restore order,” tweeted Dhankhar.

The Governor in a series of tweets described the situation in the state as “horrendous” and urged Mamata to restore order. He said that he was being flooded with “SOS appeals” and “harmads” were on a killing spree in Bengal.

“Reports indicate horrendous state of affairs. Horrified people are fleeing to save themselves. Flooded with SOS appeals. Harmads are on a killing and destruction spree. Such nosediving of constitutional values cannot be countenanced. Call upon @MamataOfficial to restore order,” tweeted Dhankhar.

Urging the West Bengal and Kolkata Police to end the “senseless political violence”, the Governor stated that the Bengali diaspora have expressed concern over the lawlessness in the state.

“Police @WBPolice @CPKolkata must end senseless political violence, vandalism, arson, killings and intimidation that shames democracy.Bengali diaspora world over has expressed concern over alarming lawlessness. Why post poll violence only WB ? Why this assault on democracy?,” tweeted Dhankhar.

Denying the allegations, TMC MP and national spokesperson Derek O’Brien asked the Prime Minister to “stop the stunts.”

“PM makes a call to West Bengal governor on ‘political violence’. (Exaggerated 214%). Stop the stunts, Mr Prime Minister. Work the phones on #COVID19 India or this,” tweeted O'Brien.

The development comes after the Centre has sought a report on post-poll violence from the West Bengal government.

The state BJP alleged that since the results of the Assembly elections were declared on Sunday, nine BJP workers were killed in political violence in the last 36 hours and 273 incidents of BJP workers being attacked by TMC cadres took place in Bengal.

Late on Sunday night four persons died in clashes between the TMC and the BJP in Bardhaman. The TMC claimed that some of them were their workers.
