There's no denying the fact that Anupam Kher is one of the most versatile actors in the Hindi film industry. The veteran enjoys a strong fan following due to his impressive screen presence, effective dialogue delivery and sincere performances. On Sunday, as the star turns 66, here is a look at five films that prove he is an artiste par excellence.

Saaransh (1984)

Widely regarded as the film that established Anupam as a force to be reckoned with, Saaransh was a hard-hitting drama that featured the actor in the role of an aged father. The story revolved around the hardships faced by the protagonist after his son is killed in New York. The powerhouse received rave reviews for his work in the film, which was selected as India's official entry to the Academy Awards.

Daddy was a moving drama that revolved around the bond between an alcoholic and his caring daughter. Anupam did full justice to the role of Anand, adding depth to a character that could so easily have been reduced to a mere caricature. His scenes with his reel daughter, played by Pooja Bhatt, were as relatable as anything can be.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

The actor played the the role of Shah Rukh Khan's bindass father in this romantic drama and impressed fans with his lively performance. His scenes with Bollywood's King' were quirky and emotional at the same time and added a great deal of depth to the cult classic. The film had a stellar cast that included Kajol, the late Amrish Puri and Farida Jalal.

Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005)

The film was directed by Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua and featured Anupam in the role of a retired professor, who believed he was responsible for Mahatma Gandhi's death. The actor delivered a stellar performance, bringing out the vulnerabilities of his character. Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara received rave reviews for highlighting the importance of Bapu's teachings.

A Wednesday! (2008)

The ace artiste essayed the role of a senior police officer in the Neeraj Pandey-helmed thriller and matched Nasseeruddin Shah's performance. The film revolved around the journey of a common man, played by 'Hero Hiral', and touched upon a range of sensitive topics. It received rave reviews and did decent business at the box office.
