Malayalam actress Shanta Devi passes away

In a career spanning close to six decades, she acted in 480 films besides numerous plays.
Shanta Devi had won many awards including National Award for supporting actress for her performance in 'Yamanam' in 1992 directed by Bharath Gopi.

Her first film was 'Minnaminungu' (1957) directed by Ramu Karyat.She was the recipient of life time achievement award instituted by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi in 2005.
'Akashadooth','Dhruvam', 'Devasuram', 'Kamaladhalam', "manichithra thazhu' and 'Midhunam' are among her prominent films.

'Annarakannanum Thannalayathu' was the last film in which Shanta Devi had acted.
She was staying in a government-run old-age home near here since last month after her son moved to Tamil Nadu.

Noted playback singer Abdul Khader was her husband.In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan expressed grief at the death of Shanta Devi. In a condolence message, he said Shanta Devi had made immense contribution to Malayalam cineme and stage.

Cultural minister M A Babu, in his condolence message, said Shanta Devi opted for a career in acting at a time when women shied away from the profession.
