Singer Kanika Kapoor tests positive for COVID-19, says she's 'feeling ok'

Panic prevailed in the state capital of Lucknow after Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor, who attended at least three parties here in which several VIPs, including a Lok Sabha MP, a former chief minister, a UP minister along with 100 others were present, tested positive for coronavirus on Friday.

Kanika was admitted to the isolation ward at the KG Medical University hospital here after being found to be infected with COVID 19, officials here said.

According to the sources, Kanika, who had returned from London a few days back, arrived here on March 15 and went straight to her residence here at a multi-storied apartment building in Mahanagar area. 

She gave a program at a party hosted by former Congress leader Akbar Ahmed Dumpy at the latter's residence. Sources said that BJP MP Dushyant Singh, former Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje Scindia, UP health minister Jai Pratap and several bureaucrats had attended the party.

Kanika also visited a skin clinic and a hotel here, where also she held programs. Over one hundred persons were said to have attended the programs.

It was alleged that Kanika managed to slip away from the Lucknow airport without being checked, she denied the charge.

She also had selfies with people and shook hands with them, sources said.

In a statement, the Bollywood singer said that she and her family were complete quarantine and following medical advice. ''Contact mapping of the people I have been in touch with is underway as well,'' she added.

''I was scanned at the airport as per normal procedure ten days ago, when I came back home....the symptoms developed only four days ago,'' she claimed.

UP health minister Jai Pratap, who had also attended one of the parties, said that action would be taken against the Bollywood singer if it was found that she had broken the protocol.

''Kanika did not quarantine herself after returning from abroad...she visited many places without informing the authorities...she will be acted against,'' he said.

A three kilometre area around Kanika's residence had been put under complete lockdown, officials here said.
