Will these upcoming movies help Shruti Haasan rule Telugu cinema again?

Shruti Haasan may be on the verge of reviving her Tollywood career

Actor Shruti Haasan was arguably one of the bankable names in the Telugu film industry a few years ago and enjoyed a strong fan following due to her impressive body of work. She, however, took a break from Tollywood after the release of the poorly-received movie Katamarayudu (2017) to concentrate on her music career and personal life. The hiatus and the emergence of younger stars took a toll on her standing in the industry.

Nearly three years after the release of Katamarayudu, the star looks set to reclaim her throne. The actor returned to Telugu cinema with the Sankranti release Krack, which emerged as a big hit despite hitting the screens at a time when theatres were operating at 50 per cent capacity. Her performance and glamorous screen presence proved to be major highlights of the Ravi Teja-starrer.

While Krack was a complete commercial affair, her next major release Vakeel Saab-- which reunites her with Gabbar Singh and Katamarayudu co-star Pawan Kalyan -- is expected to be a message-oriented drama. The film, a remake of the Hindi hit Pink, revolves around the need to respect consent while highlighting that ‘no means no’. The Race Gurram star, who plays the role of PK’s wife in the biggie, features prominently on some of the posters despite the fact that she is unlikely to get much screen time in the film. Many feel, this proves that she is an asset for Vakeel Saab.

Post the release of Pawan Kalyan’s film, she will be turning her attention to the pan-India movie Salaar that marks her first collaboration with actor Prabhas. The Prashanth Neel-directed magnum opus is likely to be a gamechanger for all concerned as it is being shot on a big budget.

Shruti’s Tamil film Laabam, co-starring Vijay Sethupathi, too might help her consolidate her standing in Tollywood if it is dubbed in Telugu. A lot will, however, depend on whether the dubbed version gets a wide release. Either way, the future looks bright for the young star
