'Hooked' by Asako Yuzuki: Messy realities uneasy truths

Hooked by Asako Yuzuki (translated by Polly Barton) reads like a multiverse of women and womanhoods colliding, overlapping, and refusing containment. In a literary landscape where women are often written as narrative scaffolding, orbiting male protagonists, sharpening their character arcs, and absorbing their crises, Yuzuki offers something closer to a counter-fiction.

Here, women do not merely exist in relation to men, but exist fully and messily in relation to each other, as subjects of their own desires, anxieties, and contradictions. Their lives unfold through dense backstories and uneven trajectories, as they push through a maze structured by forces that repeatedly displace them to the margins even as they attempt to claim space. Men recede into the background, occasionally functional and rarely central, no longer anchoring either the movement of the plot or the meaning of women’s lives. What emerges instead is a darkly intimate and unsettling cartography of urban womanhood, marked by accelerated rhythms of living, competitive self-fashioning, and a persistent sense of alienation that shadows even the most intimate connections.

At the centre of this cartography is the volatile, almost romantic intensity of the relationship between Eriko and Shoko. Eriko is a career-driven woman from a well-to-do family, with a stable income in a trading company, born and raised in Tokyo, and deeply invested in a life structured by discipline and control. Shoko, in contrast, is a housewife and blogger from a fractured family who writes about her everyday domestic life with her husband.

Their friendship unfolds with the grammar of desire, marked by longing, projection, dependency, and eventual suffocation, where recognition quickly turns into toxic attachment. What begins as a tentative connection between two lonely women in their thirties gradually spirals into a relationship that is as fragile as it is coercive, intimate yet deeply unsettling.

Yuzuki resists the temptation to sentimentalise female friendship and instead renders it as a dense and shifting terrain of care and control, intimacy and intrusion, making it feel at once familiar and disquieting.

The chaos of their bond is not incidental but precisely what gives it emotional and narrative charge. In a world that offers women few spaces for unmediated connection and hunger for being understood, the desire for closeness becomes overwhelming, stretching into something consuming, even destructive.

This intensity is inseparable from the broader conditions the novel inhabits — the isolating architectures of urban, neoliberal life. Both Eriko and Shoko are products of a social order that demands constant self-making while eroding the very grounds for belonging. Eriko’s disciplined, hyper-managed existence and Shoko’s utter disgust towards domesticity and care work, which becomes the hallmark of her blog, are not opposites so much as parallel strategies of survival. Each is engaged in the labour of producing a coherent self under conditions that reward visibility but not intimacy.

Loneliness, in this sense, is not an individual failure but a structural condition, one that renders relationships fragile, instrumental, and fraught with expectation.

The novel’s engagement with domesticity sharpens this critique. Through the contrasting figures of their mothers, Yuzuki exposes the uneven, often invisible labour that underwrites the making and unmaking of the “happy family.”

Eriko’s mother withdraws from paid work to invest entirely in her daughter’s future, embodying a form of care that is both enabling and erasing. Shoko’s mother, by contrast, exits the family altogether, her departure marked not by abandonment alone but by exhaustion. Together, these trajectories destabilise the ideal of domestic stability, revealing it as a fragile construct sustained by gendered sacrifice and male privilege. What appears as familial harmony is, in fact, the outcome of continuous, often unacknowledged care labour of women.

What makes Hooked particularly striking is its commitment to inhabiting the complexity of women’s worlds without any apparent resolution. There are no clean moral binaries here, no easily redeemable characters. Instead, Yuzuki offers women who are contradictory, obsessive, sometimes unkind, often unknowable and thus, entirely human. Their relationships are layered with resentment, dependence, admiration, desire, and fear, refusing the neat scripts of solidarity that are often imposed upon narratives of female friendship. In doing so, the novel does not dismiss the possibility of connection but rather situates it within the messy realities of lived experience.

Reading Hooked is an unsettling experience not only because it deeply humanises women, but also because it lingers in the quiet, suffocating spaces of gendered everyday life in a metropolis.

The novel suggests that under contemporary conditions, the very desire for connection can become consuming, even destructive. And yet, it is precisely this desire that renders the characters so recognisable and relatable.

Yuzuki does not offer solutions; instead, she holds up a mirror to the often precarious intimacies that structure women’s lives today. What remains is a lingering discomfort and the uneasy recognition that these worlds are not as distant as they might first appear.
