Girl's murder case: Forum seeks compensation for family

Demanding suitable compensation to the family of a college student who was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered at Siddapura, a Horata Samithi constituted in support of the girl’s family has warned of intensifying the protest across the district if the authorities fail to pay compensation.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Samithi member Rejith Kumar said none of the elected representatives and officials has visited the family members even after two weeks of the murder of the girl student. Compensation should be paid to the family of the victim immediately, they demanded.

He urged District In-charge Minister Sa Ra Mahesh to visit the house of the victim and announce the compensation.

The government should also provide a government job to one of the family members, he urged.

Giving an ultimatum of one week to the district administration to announce the financial assistance to the family of the victim, he said Kodagu bandh will be called if the district administration fails to provide the financial assistance to the family.

He said, “The trial of the arrested should be speeded up and announce the death penalty to the guilty. The police should ensure that such incidents do not recur in the district.”

Member A S Mustafa said, “The police have told the estate owners to furnish details of the labourers of other states who are working in the district. But the estate owners have failed to furnish those details. As a result, the crime rate has increased in the district”.

He urged the police to initiate strict action against estate owners who fail to furnish details on labourers working in the estate.

The demands of the Horata Samithi are - Rs 25 lakh compensation to the victim’s family, a government job to one of her family members, a site, all labourers from outside the state should be externed from the district and the estate owner who had employed the arrested in connection with sexual assault and murder of the girl should pay compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family.
