The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) late on Thursday night arrested Ahmed Aalam Sheikh alias Ahmed Lambu, a Dawood aide and an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, from South Gujarat.

The police had been on the lookout for Ahmed since 1996 and had even announced an award of Rs 5 lakh since 1997. “The Interpol has also issued a Red Corner Notice against him,” an official said.

Sources said that Ahmed was involved in planning, landing of ammunition and execution of the blasts in which more than 250 people were killed and thousands injured.

Ahmed was said to be in the meeting held at Dawood's bungalow for planning the blasts, landing of RDX at Raigadh and also carrying out serial blasts.

Ahmed is said to have fled the country to Dubai, even as his family continued to live in Mumbai. He fled with the help of Mohammed Dosa, another key accused in the case. Officials claim that it was Dosa who helped Ahmed procure a fake passport.

Ahmed often changed his identity to evade arrest and was currently using the name Khalid.

Officials said that he would most likely be handed over to the Mumbai Police after formalities are completed.
