Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S said that heavy vehicles like trucks, lorries and tankers may be allowed on Shiradi Ghat stretch from next week.

To a query from media persons on Wednesday, he said that Hassan district administration is yet to give clearance for allowing heavy vehicles on Shiradi Ghat as the traffic is still be regulated on two locations near Marnahalli on the stretch.

“From Dakshina Kannada district administration side, we have okayed the movement of heavy vehicles. The decision is likely to be taken after Deepavali. As the traffic on Shiradi Ghat stretch is heavy due to holiday on account of Deepavali, the allowing of 18-wheeler trucks may result in traffic congestion,” said Sasikanth Senthil S.

It may be recalled that the Ghat was closed for all kinds of vehicles from August 14 following massive landslides at multiple locations due to torrential rains.

After clearing the landslides, the stretch was reopened to light motor vehicles like cars, jeep, two-wheelers and maxi cabs from September 5 and buses including multi-axle buses from October 3.
