'Houses for flood victims to be completed shortly'

The construction work of houses for flood victims in Kodagu will be completed shortly, said In-charge Deputy Commissioner K Lakshmi Priya.

“The victims need not panic. The foundation work is nearing completion at Karnangeri. The work on RCC houses is in progress and is likely to be completed by February end.”

The work on the construction of houses for rehabilitation of victims at Made is also in progress and will be completed by March end, she added.

The foundation work for the construction of houses at Jambooru in Madapura, Somwarpet taluk, is underway. The house construction works in other identified areas will commence shortly. Quality will be maintained in the work, said Lakshmi Priya.

Two-bedroom houses will be constructed for 840 families, who have lost their houses in flood and landslides in Kodagu. The cost of each unit of the house is Rs 8.85 lakh. A sum of Rs 82.74 crore will be utilised for the construction of the houses, said the In-charge Deputy Commissioner.

She said, “Rs 31.63 crore will be utilised for providing basic facilities while Rs 11.11 crore has been earmarked for construction of houses under various housing scheme. The government has already ordered the release of Rs 71.63 crore to Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The land has been identified for the construction of houses for the victims at Karnangeri, K Nidugane, Galibeedu, Made, Sampaje, Biligeri and Jambooru villages. Members of Prakrithi Vikopa Parihara Horata Samithi had recently staged a protest against the delay in the completion of the house construction work.
