6 booked for Mumbai mall hospital fire that killed 9 patients

Fire had erupted in a shop and spread to the hospital located on the top floor of the four-storeyed mall building

A day after the fire in Sunrise Hospital and Dreams Mall at Bhandup claimed 10 lives; the Mumbai Police registered an FIR even as the civic body ordered a probe within a fortnight’s time.

The Bhandup police station registered an FIR into the case.

Those listed as accused include Dreams Mall directors Rakesh Wadhwan, Sarang Wadhwan, Nikita Trehan, Deepak Shirke and other people from the administration as accused in the case.

Sunrise Hospital Director Amit Singh Trehan, Sweety Jain and other administrators, too, have been named in the FIR.

The Dreams Mall was developed by HDIL in 2009.

During the outbreak of the pandemic, the Covid-19 hospital was set up on the top floor of the mall and permission was granted till March 31, but with riders.

No arrests have been made so far.

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation has also started a probe into the incident to get to the cause of the fire.

Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has sought a report within 15 days from Deputy Municipal Commissioner Prabhat Rahangdale, who heads the Disaster Management Unit and is a former Chief Fire Officer.

The brief is to find out the cause of the fire to determine that all required licences and other formalities had been undertaken. The report will also look for any lacuna in fire compliances and the fire extinguishing efforts.
