Bitti Mohanty's certificates forged, claim Kerala police

Last Updated 15 March 2013, 21:01 IST

A four-member team from the Kerala Police investigating the Bitti Mohanty case has found that the certificates submitted by Raghav Rajan, as Bitti called himself at the time of his arrest, were fake.

The team which arrived in Bhubaneswar late on Thursday is focusing on the fake documents presented by the rape convict regarding his educational qualifications to secure the bank job in Kerala.

On Friday morning, the team first visited a city-based privately run deemed university from where Bitti had obtained a BTech degree in 2005. He was studying management in New Delhi when he jumped parole and escaped in the latter part of 2006 just months after a court in Alwar in Rajasthan awarded him seven years imprisonment after his conviction in a rape case involving a young German girl.

“We checked the documents in the university and found that no certificate had been issued in the name Raghav Rajan. This confirms that Bitti had forged his educational certificates”, a member of the four-member Kerala Police team told reporters. The team also visited a school and a college in Cuttack where Bitti had studied and completed ICSC and plus two courses respectively.

Like the Bhubaneswar-based university, the authorities of both educational institutes in Cuttack told the investigating team that no certificate had been issued in the name of Raghav Rajan. All the certificates had been issued in the name of Bitihotra (Bitti) Mohanty.

Bitti had forged all his educational certificates and replaced Bitihotra Mohanty’s name with Raghav Rajan. The Kerala Police team is also expected to question Bitti’s father, former director general of Odisha police, B B Mohanty. When Bitti jumped parole in 2006, the Rajasthan Police had charged the former top cop of helping his son escape.

In Rajasthan, another team of Kerala Police examined the records of Alwar jail on Thursday in order to establish Bitti Mohanty’s identity and reached Jaipur.
