<div>The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its schools to start their day by singing the National Anthem by students, teachers and other staff. <br /><br />In a recent directive to all the school heads, it has issued a detailed instruction on how and when to play or sing National Anthem with decorum and respect, seeking its strict compliance.<br /><br />“In all schools, the day’s work may begin with community singing of the National Anthem. School authorities should make adequate provision in their programmes for popularising the singing of the national anthem and promoting respect for the National Flag among students,” the instructions issued to schools by the board, stated.<br /><br />In its communication to all the school heads, the board has also cited over a year-old Calcutta High Court order on playing and singing of national anthem as well as those of other countries for various occasions. “In compliance of the direction given by the Calcutta High Court in its order dated September 22, 2014, it is notified that the schools must strictly comply the orders relating to National Anthem of India,” D T Sudharsan Rao, joint secretary in the CBSE, said in a communication to heads of all the schools affiliated to the board.<br /><br />A Kendriya Vidyalay Sangathan official said children start their day in all Central government-run schools by singing the National Anthem. “The private schools, however, have their own system. While the day starts in most of private schools with singing of school song or prayers like Saraswati Vandana, the National Anthem is sung only on certain occasions,” he added.<br /><br />A CBSE official said that the directive does not make it mandatory for schools to ensure that students, staff and teachers start their day with singing of the national anthem everyday. “But there is no harm if they do so,” the official added.<br /></div>
