<p>In the most significant disciplinary action of the decade, the CPM has expelled former state committee member and party strongman Anil Basu for anti-party activities and for threatening to take the party brass to court.<br /><br /></p>.<p>At a two-day meeting at New Delhi, the party’s central committee ratified the state committee decision to expel the former five-time MP from Arambag in Hooghly district. “Basu severely violated party discipline by holding a media conference along with his wife while under suspension. Following his anti-party statements in public, the state committee recommended his expulsion at a June 6 meeting,” CPM State Secretary Biman Bose said in a press statement.<br /><br />“The central committee approved the recommendation at its June 9-10 meeting,” the statement said.<br /><br />As per the recommendation by a three-member committee headed by Madan Ghosh, the state committee, on April 29, suspended Basu from the party's primary membership for three months allegedly for alienating from the people and indulging in favouritism.<br /><br />During suspension, on May 4, Basu and his wife Geeta convened a press conference and told reporters that they would file a criminal defamation case against Biman Bose and take him to court. The expulsion and its ratification came thereafter.<br /><br />Basu held the Arambag seat for five consecutive terms till he lost in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.</p>
