Gadkari inaugurates barrier-free toll plaza at Delhi’s Mundka-Bakkarwala

MLFF enables vehicles to pass without stopping, using a combination of Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and FASTag-based electronic toll collection.

New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday (May 11) inaugurated the country’s second Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) in Delhi.

The facility follows the first MLFF plaza commissioned on May 1 at Choryasi Toll Plaza on the Surat-Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is accelerating the nationwide rollout of the advanced tolling technology. As per the plan, 17 fee plazas across nine states — Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Assam — are scheduled to become operational by September 2026. An additional 108 plazas under Phase-2 will be completed by March 2027.

The MLFF system enables vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, using a combination of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and FASTag-based electronic toll collection. The barrier-less set-up significantly reduces congestion, fuel consumption, and travel time while improving the overall driving experience, the NHAI said.

In cases of insufficient FASTag balance, invalid tags, or technical issues, users will receive an Electronic Notice (E-Notice) for the unpaid user fee, which must be settled within 72 hours. The initiative marks a major step towards modernising India’s highway tolling infrastructure with minimal human intervention and seamless traffic flow, the NHAI said.
