Massive fire engulfs slum cluster in Delhi's Matiala; visuals surface

On Wednesday night, a massive fire broke out in Delhi's Matiala village, where a cluster of jhuggis and waste material warehouses near the fish market were affected. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or injuries in the incident.

A Delhi Fire Service officer informed the media that they received a call regarding the blaze in the jhuggi cluster around 11.54 pm on March 11, following which fire tenders were rushed to the spot to contain the flames.

At least 80 shanties were gutted after a massive fire broke out in a slum cluster near the fish market in Matiala area of southwest Delhi, police said on Thursday.

A government official told PTI that some heaps of waste material, including plastics, were also involved in the fire. "The fire has been completely extinguished. The shanties were made of highly flammable material such as bamboo, tarpaulin and plastic sheets. Fortunately, due to the swift operation, there were no casualties."

Earlier, it was reported that hundreds of slums were destroyed as fire engulfed the area. Approximately 300 to 400 slums were destroyed. The cause of the fire is still unclear. The fire was brought under control after hours of effort. At present, there are no reports of any casualties, ANI reported quoting authorities.

Over 20 fire tenders were deployed to douse the fire, which was brought under control at 3.45 am.

Visuals from the incident surfaced shortly after.

Clippings recorded fumes and smoke turning the night sky red. They also showed fire operations underway. Recent videos documented the aftermath, stating that several slums were destroyed.
