Ex-SC judge Justice Dinesh Maheshwari takes charge as chairman, Law Commission

New Delhi: Former Supreme Court judge, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari has been appointed as the Chairperson of the 23rd Law Commission of India. 

He took charge of the office on Tuesday and his term would last till August 30, 2027.

Advocate Hitesh Jain and Professor D P Verma (Law Faculty, BHU) are the other members of the Commission. 

Usually, each commission is constituted for a term of three years. 

The Law Commissions have been able to make important contributions towards the progressive development and codification of the laws in the country.

The terms of reference of the Twenty-Third Law Commission included the review/repeal of obsolete laws, identify laws which are no longer needed or relevant and can be immediately repealed, creating a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for periodic review of existing laws inter-alia for the undertaking of simplification of language and processes, identify laws which are not in harmony with the economic needs and requirements of the times and require amendments and identify laws which otherwise require changes or amendments and to make suggestions for their amendments, among others.
