Out of power for 30 years, Congress targets 2027 Gujarat polls with special resolution

Ahmedabad: Out of power for the past 30 years, the Congress on Wednesday passed a "special resolution" targeting 2027 Assembly polls in Gujarat.

The resolution outlines party's "strategies" to win back Gujarat by highlighting issues right from economic policies, hardship of farmers, students, industries and holding caste census, among others.  

On the last day of two-day All India Congress Committee (AICC) session held on Sabarmati Riverfront, the party released the resolution mentioning how "Amul was a result of "vision" of Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr V Kurien, Gujarat Congress established a strong foundation of agricultural development by providing drinking and irrigation and implemented Narmada Scheme."

Addressing a press conference, Congress general secretary incharge of communication Jairam Ramesh said that for the first time, the party has brought a state-specific resolution during an AICC convention, which in the past had never happened.

He said that the resolution has a moto of "Nutan Gujarat, Nutan Congress (new Gujarat, new Congress). Congress has been out of power since 1995 in Gujarat which has been under complete dominance of BJP. In 2022 assembly polls, Congress suffered its biggest defeat when it could win only 17 seats in the house of 182. 

In the resolution, Congress has alleged that the "peak of corruption during BJP's rule in the past 30 years eclipsed" the development and progress of the state where big bridges collapsed and question papers recruitment examinations leaked frequently. 

The resolution begins with "the expectation of Gujarat is unfulfilled, Congress is the only axis of development" and lists issues right from malnutrition among children, falling standards of education, rising costs, unemployment, among others.

The party's resolution promises strict implementation of laws protecting tribal rights, caste census, justice for Dalits, tribals, OBCs, minority and the poor. It promises of doing away with the contractual system in government jobs, outsourcing, among others in the government departments.
