In a shocking incident, commuters on Gurugram's Rapid Metro were seen walking on metro tracks on Friday evening after a massive power outage brought services to a halt.

The sudden blackout occurred after an explosion at the 220 KVA substation in Sector 72 caused the electricity grid to collapse, an official informed PTI. The disruption subsequently affected metro services from 7:50 pm to 8:33 pm.

"Due to power supply failure from Sec 72 substation of HVPNL in Gurugram, which feeds power to Rapid Metro, Gurugram, and the Gurugram section of the Yellow Line, train services were not available from 7:50 pm to 8:33 pm in Rapid Metro," a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson told PTI.

During the disruption, which occurred during Friday evening peak hours, several commuters were left stranded inside the metro and were seen stepping out and walking along the tracks to safely reach nearby stations.

According to news agency PTI, services on the Yellow Line resumed after power was restored through emergency repair operations initiated by HVPNL at the Sector 72 substation.

Scorching heat & frequent power outages

According to The Economic Times, Gurugram has been facing frequent power cuts while recording its highest-ever power demand this week at 2,372 MW, amid residents experiencing scorching heat of around 40 degrees Celsius.

Earlier this week, the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heatwave to severe heatwave conditions across Haryana between May 24 and 27.
