I-T Dept deploys 'Madhu Kar' to help taxpayers understand new rules

As part of its nationwide awareness campaign on the new Income Tax Act, 2025, the Income Tax Department has introduced Madhu Kar, a mascot-led initiative aimed at simplifying tax laws for the public.

The Income Tax Act, 2025, came into force on April 1, 2026, replacing the six-decade-old law and marking a major overhaul of India’s direct tax system.

The department has rolled out the initiative as part of its broader outreach campaign to familiarise taxpayers with the new framework, providing a simplified, better structured and improved version of the new laws.

Meaning of 'Madhu Kar’

The name Madhu Kar carries a symbolic meaning, in which Madhu means honey and Kar means tax, reflecting the idea that taxes, like honey collected by bees, contribute to building and sustaining the nation. According to the Income Tax Department, the honeybee also represents diligence, community effort, and a well-organised system.

In the comic-styled guide, Madhu Kar, depicted as a friendly bee, is being used to explain key provisions of the new law in an easy-to-understand format. The mascot represents diligence and community contribution, aligning with the idea of taxpayers as nation builders.

The new Act aims to address long-standing issues of complexity by reorganising provisions, reducing redundant sections, and introducing clearer language, making it more accessible to common citizens.

Among the key changes is the introduction of a single ‘tax year’ concept, replacing the earlier system of previous year and assessment year, along with a more structured arrangement of provisions across chapters.

According to officials, such initiatives are crucial to ensure smoother adoption of the new law, as the government seeks to build a taxpayer-friendly, transparent, and modern tax administration system.
