<p> Deemed to be the world’s third largest airport passenger terminal – Terminal 3 – at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. <br /><br />The terminal will begin its operations for international passengers on July 15 and domestic passengers will shift to it on July 30.<br /><br />Constructed in just 37 months to coincide with New Delhi’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games in October, the terminal spreads over 4 km and boasts 97 automated walkways and 78 aerobridges.<br /><br />The new terminal was built by a public-private consortium – headed by Bangalore headquartered GMR Group – that included Germany’s Frankfurt and Malaysian Airports. The new structure, built at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore, is spread over more than 120 acres and has 168 check-in counters. <br /><br />The facility, on which nearly 40,000 workmen toiled at the height of construction, is the country’s third world-class airport after Hyderabad and Bangalore. The new terminal has 20,000 square metres of commercial space dubbed as “Dilli Bazaar” at both domestic and international depatures having a range of shops to give international shopping experience to passengers. <br /><br />An array of restaurants, bars, cafes and fast food joints of both domestic and international brands are ready to open. In an effort to give a visual treat to passengers, murals and sculptures adorn the walls. The new terminal will take care of the projected increase in footfalls at least till 2013. Like many international airports across the world, T3 will also have a high-speed metro link connecting it to the centre of the city.<br /><br /></p>
