<p>The IISc and IIM-Bangalore have grabbed the top slot under university and B-school categories, respectively, in the first-ever ranking of the Indian higher educational institutions, on Monday.<br /><br /></p>.<p>While the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, emerged as the best among the engineering colleges, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Science in Karnataka secured the top position among other pharma schools in the country.<br /><br />Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) and the University of Hyderabad (Telangana), figured in the list of top five universities in India, notwithstanding the raging protests over PhD scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide as well as slapping of sedition charges against JNU students, amid accusations by right-wing groups that the two campuses were “hub of anti-national activities”.<br /><br />“The ranking framework will empower a larger number of Indian institutions to participate in the global rankings, and create a significant impact internationally too. I see this as a sensitisation process and an empowering tool, and not a tool for protection,” Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said, releasing the report, titled “India Rankings 2016”.<br /><br />The IISc, which brought laurels to the country by making its maiden entry in a global ranking of higher educational institution last year, was ranked as the top-most among universities in India with a weighted score of 91.81, closely followed by the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, (score 87.58) and the JNU (86.46). The University of Hyderabad was ranked fourth with weighted score of 85.45. Delhi University, ranked so far as the best in the country by certain agencies, secured sixth position with weighted score of 83.19 as the fifth position was grabbed by Tezpur University of Assam with 84.31 score.<br /> Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, was ranked seventh (score 81.22) followed by the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Kerala (score 88.83), Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, Rajasthan (76.85).<br /><br />The Aligarh Muslim University was ranked 10th with 76.62 weighted score.Predictably, the IITs (both old and new) led the league tables for engineering colleges under research and teaching category, occupying the first eleven positions with the five IITs taking the five ranking slots.<br /><br />IIT Madras which topped the list with a weighted score of 89.42, was followed by IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur with weighted score of 87.67, 83.91, 82.03 and 81.07 respectively. IIT Roorkee secured sixth position.<br /><br />“IIT Hyderabad, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Ropar, IIT Patna (rank 7 to 10), IIT Indore (rank 16), IIT Mandi (rank 20), IIT Jodhpur (rank 25) and IIT Bhubaneswar (rank 26), setup in 2008-2009, can truly be considered as rising stars since all these new IITs secured positions within the first thirty slots,” the report underlined.<br /><br />The IIMs too hog the top slots among the B-schools. IIM Bangalore, which secured the top position with a weighted score of 93.04, was closely followed by IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, and IIM Lucknow.<br /><br />IIM-Udaipur (rank 5), International Management Institute, Kolkata (rank 12), IIM, Tiruchirappalli (rank 14), IIM, Raipur (rank 18), IIM Rohtak (rank 19), Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (rank 20), IIM Kashipur (rank 21) and IIM Ranchi (rank 28) were declared as rising stars.<br /><br />Poor response<br />A total of 2,734 higher educational institutions were ranked under university, management, engineering and pharmacy categories. The Architecture and general degree colleges could not be ranked this year because of a poor response from them on request for submission of data.<br /><br /> </p>
