India says recent agreements by Maldives might cause revenue loss, will consider them in terms of policies

New Delhi: India will take into account recent agreements by Maldives authorities while framing its policies towards the country, New Delhi said on Friday, adding that the agreements would likely cause revenue loss for the island nation.

Maldives has signed trade agreements with Turkey and China in the last few months, but the Indian foreign ministry spokesperson did not directly name the two countries.

"Recent agreements that are likely to result in revenue loss for the Maldives government are obviously a matter of concern and do not do well for the long term fiscal stability of the country," Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in response to a question at a weekly press briefing.

China and India both vie for influence in the strategically located archipelago.
