<p>Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was on Thursday sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India in the presence of several national leaders.</p>.<p>Dhankhar took the oath in Hindi in the name of God.</p>.<p>President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to the 71-year-old Dhankhar in a brief ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, which was attended by outgoing Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former President Ram Nath Kovind and former Vice President Hamid Ansari among others.</p>.<p>A number of Union Ministers, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla among others also attended.</p>.<p>The ceremony started with the arrival of Murmu. The notification of election was read then and following this, Dhankhar, who will also be the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, was administered the oath.</p>.<p>Dhankhar has defeated Opposition joint candidate Margaret Alva by 346 votes. In the election held on August 6, Dhankhar had polled 528 votes while his opponent had bagged 182 votes.</p>.<p>He had bagged 74.36% votes, the highest winning margin in the Presidential elections since 1997.</p>.<p>One of the toughest assignments waiting for Dhankhar will be to run the Rajya Sabha ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With JD(U) leaving the ruling NDA-fold and the ruling BJP-led NDA not enjoying majority in the Upper House, the Opposition voice is going to get shriller following Bihar developments, Dhankhar will have to employ all his persuasive skills to run the House.</p>.<p>With his election, both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha have presiding officers from Rajasthan.</p>.<p>A lawyer by profession, he began his political work with Congress and later joined the Janata Dal. He was a Deputy Minister in the short-lived Chandrasekhar government.</p>.<p>A protege of former Deputy Prime Minister, Dhankhar belongs to the Jat community and the BJP hopes to cash in on this in the Assembly elections in Rajasthan and neighbouring Haryana.</p>.<p>Dhankhar shot to national limelight after he was appointed West Bengal Governor in 2019 and his frequent run-ins with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. On July 17, he resigned from the post of Governor after the BJP chose him as the Vice Presidential candidate.</p>
