Jammu & Kashmir reopens 14 tourist spots, signaling revival of travel sector

Srinagar: Tourists can now explore more of Jammu and Kashmir's scenic beauty as the administration announced the reopening of 14 destinations across the Union Territory that had been closed following last year’s Pahalgam terror attack.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha confirmed the move on Monday, after a comprehensive security review. In a post on the social media platform 'X', the Lt Governor stated that the decision was taken following a "thorough security review and discussion."

He directed the immediate resumption of visitor access to 11 sites in the Kashmir Valley and three in the Jammu region.

The newly accessible attractions include 11 in the Kashmir Valley — Yousmarg, Doodhpathri, Dandipora Park (Kokernag), Peer Ki Gali, Padpawan (Shopian), Astanpora, and the Asia’s largest Tulip Garden in Srinagar — and three in Jammu: Devi Pindi in Reasi, Mahu Mangat in Ramban, and Mughal Maidan in Kishtwar.

Four more locations — Gurez, Athwatoo, Bangus in north Kashmir, and Ramkund in Ramban — are expected to welcome visitors once snow clearance is completed.

Restoring Kashmir’s tourism charm

The April 24, 2025, attack at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives including mostly tourists, had shaken confidence in the region’s safety. Authorities temporarily closed nearly 50 tourist spots across Kashmir and Jammu, from popular destinations like Yousmarg and Doodhpathri to offbeat retreats such as Bangus Valley and Aharbal, to conduct security audits and ensure visitor safety.

While major circuits like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Dal Lake remained open with increased security, many trekking trails, parks, and scenic points stayed off-limits for months.

The phased reopening since mid-2025 has steadily restored access to high-altitude valleys, remote plateaus, and popular picnic spots. This latest announcement brings back some of the most long-awaited sites, allowing tourists to experience the region’s natural splendor in full.

Economic boost and visitor confidence

Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the move as a lifeline for the local economy, which had been hit by declining visitor arrivals and revenues after the Pahalgam incident. A local guesthouse owner said, “Reopening these destinations will encourage travelers to plan trips again — it’s vital for our businesses and the community.”

Authorities hope the expanded list of accessible sites, combined with continued emphasis on security, will attract larger numbers of domestic and international tourists in the upcoming season. With picturesque valleys, serene plateaus, and cultural landmarks now open, Jammu and Kashmir is aiming to reaffirm its image as a safe, vibrant, and unforgettable travel destination.
