Omar’s ‘cloudburst’ remark fuels speculation over NC legislators’ meeting

Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s enigmatic “cloudburst” remark last month returned to haunt Jammu and Kashmir’s political circles on Wednesday as a meeting of National Conference legislators fuelled expectations of a major political announcement, prompting Omar to repeatedly push back against rumours surrounding the gathering.

The meeting generated intense speculation after Abdullah had said on May 6 that he wanted to “burst like a cloudburst” after Eid and speak openly on several issues.

As rumours swirled over the purpose of Wednesday’s meeting, opposition leaders and social media users linked it to everything from a cabinet expansion and government reshuffle to possible political developments, including Omar government resigning.

Seeking to quell the speculation, Omar posted photographs of legislators travelling in a bus and described the exercise as an off-site review meeting.

“We are off for an off-site to spend the day taking stock of the last 19 months — the good, the not so good and everything in between,” he wrote on X.

In a subsequent post, the Chief Minister rejected claims that the venue had been changed at the last moment because of political developments.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you but it has NOT ‘been shifted at the last moment’. It was always my intention to conduct this meeting off-site and all arrangements have been made, days in advance, at the location originally chosen by me,” he wrote.

The clarifications came amid claims by opposition leaders that the meeting reflected unease within the ruling establishment. National Conference leaders, however, maintained that the gathering was a routine exercise aimed at reviewing the government’s performance and obtaining feedback from legislators.

According to party sources, the meeting is being attended by NC legislators and independent MLAs supporting the government.

Discussions are believed to be focused on governance, delivery of public services, constituency-level issues and the political challenges faced by the elected government in the Union Territory framework.

The unusual attention surrounding what the NC described as an internal review exercise underscored the intense scrutiny faced by the Omar government amid continuing debates over statehood restoration, the distribution of powers between the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor’s administration and expectations from the NC after its return to power in the 2024 Assembly elections.

For now, however, the much-anticipated “cloudburst” appears to have been a review meeting rather than the political thunderclap many had expected.
