K K Luthra Memorial moot competition: SC judge urges students to rely on natural intelligence, legal reasoning instead of AI

New Delhi: Supreme Court judge, Justice B V Nagarathna has highlighted the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, particularly in recent years. Although, acknowledging the benefits of Artificial Intelligence, she cautioned against its uncritical use.

Speaking as chief guest in the prize distribution function of 22nd K K Luthra Memorial moot competition, she expressed concerns over the increasing instances of fake citations being placed before courts, noting that lawyers and students sometimes rely on AI-generated references without proper verification from authentic judgment repositories.

She urged law students to rely on their natural intelligence and legal reasoning rather than blindly depending on artificial intelligence.

Justice Nagarathna also spoke about the relationship between a senior and a junior advocate, observing that it extends beyond mere briefing. A junior learns not only law but also professional values from the senior, and as the junior grows in the profession, the respect for the senior or mentor deepens.

She further asked young lawyers to take up legal aid matters and inspired them to uphold the integrity of the judicial system.

The judge also cautioned against adopting unethical or illegal means in legal practice and reiterated that a lawyer’s foremost duty towards the client is to present the case to the best of their ability within the bounds of law.

In conclusion, Justice Nagarathna appreciated the participation of all-girl teams in the competition and lauded the growing presence of women in litigation. She stressed that women at the Bar must be treated with respect and addressed with the same dignity and professionalism as their male counterparts in court.

Justice Nagarathna, in her speech, congratulated the Luthra family, including senior advocates Sidharth and Geeta Luthra for successfully hosting the event in honor of senior advocate K K Luthra for the past 22 years. She also spoke about the inspirational journey of late K K Luthra and encouraged students to learn from his legacy.

Delhi High Court's judges, Justices Anup Jairam Bhambhani, Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, and Sanjeev Narula of the Delhi High Court were also present on the occasion as the guests of honour.

According to Prof. (Dr) Gunjan Gupta, Professor-In-Charge Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, the winning team, Symbiosis Law School, Noida emerged as winner with Rs 30,000 cash prize, books from Advocate Subhash Sharma and extra Rs 10,000 cash prize from Dr. Avtar Singh Sethi

The first runner-up team was Lloyd Law College, Greater Noida with Rs 21,000 cash prize and extra Rs 10,000 cash prize from Dr. Avtar Singh Sethi and books from advocate Subhash Sharma.

The best memorial was bagged by Nalsar University, Hyderabad with Rs 25,000 cash prize and an extra Rs 7,500 cash prize from Dr. Sethi along with some books from Sharma.

The second best memorial was conferred upon Maharaja Agrasen with Rs 20,000 cash prize and an extra Rs 7,500 cash prize from Dr Sethi plus some books from Sharma.

Best speaker was Ms. Marya Robin, School of Law, Christ University Bangalore, with Rs 25,000 cash, books from Sharma, vouchers to resort Alila Diwa in Goa and extra Rs 7,500 cash prize from Sethi.

Second best speaker was Ms. Shambhavi Srivastava, Army Institute of Law, Mohali, with Rs 20,000 cash prize, books from Sharma and extra Rs 7,500 cash prize from Sethi.

All the participants received books from Dinesh Dudeja of Ekta book company.
