<p>On the lines of Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, the Karnataka Lalithakala Academy is planning to organise a mega state-level convention of artists for the first time to unite them and voice their issues to pull the attention of the government.</p><p>The Academy president Pa Sa Kumar stated that he is holding meetings at all four divisions and is collecting suggestions from artists and other experts to organise the convention involving all stakeholders.</p><p>“Though the Academy is 60-year-old, we could not hold such a convention, like litterateurs do. This year, we have decided to organise such an event, to highlight the problems of artists, to showcase their talent, and to encourage art students. We will submit a report to the government in this regard,” he said.</p><p>Speaking at the inauguration of a month-long national-level art exhibition at Shri Vijaya Mahantesh Fine Arts College on Lamington Road in Hubballi on Saturday, Kumar said art schools have problems like lack of teachers and lack of promotions, while artists also need a strong voice. The government provided Rs 30 crore for Sahitya Sammelana, but other cultural fields like drawing and painting lacked such support. Through ‘Manegondu Kalakruti’ initiative, Rs 6.5 lakh collected is reserved for art students’ welfare. A separate wing is being formed for female artists. Art history should be documented well, and the academy has constituted an expert committee for the documentation of all artists, Kumar added.</p><p>Central Lalit Kala Akademi’s Dharwad regional centre convener Shrinivas Shastri stated that academies get less funds, and art research works should be conducted utilising the grants of education, tribal and culture departments of both Union and state governments. He also stressed the need to properly market the artworks, to have a well-equipped art gallery in Hubballi, and to promote the practice of having paintings at homes.</p><p>Swarnaa Group of Companies managing director V S V Prasad assured to extend full support to develop a national-level art gallery at the college. </p><p>SJMV Sangha honorary director Shashi Sali presided. Sangha honorary working president Aravind Kubasad, college principal Ramesh Hiregoudar, and others were present. Around 60 paintings by noted artists from different states in the country are on display in the exhibition.</p>
