Bangalore University tells all postgraduate departments to adopt two villages

Bangalore University has made it mandatory for all postgraduate departments to adopt at least two villages from the 2026-27 academic year as a part of community engagement and social responsibility.

The university’s move is inspired by the initiative of the University’s Law College, which adopted two villages in the Tumakuru district and created legal awareness and extended legal assistance to the villagers. The college’s efforts earned praise from the villagers. 

The university has now made a decision and directed all other departments to follow. Though the university is not particular about the villages, the departments can choose the villages in the neighbouring districts.

The university has 42 departments, and if each department adopts two villages and takes on development and awareness activities, this will be a big initiative.

“Law College has taken up the initiative in association with Karnataka State Legal Services Authority. Sharing their opinion, villagers expressed gratitude towards the college,” said an official from the university.

The University’s Law College implemented a legal awareness and literacy programme at the two adopted villages.

As part of the initiative, the students of the final year Law course helped some villages even to settle their long-pending legal
hurdles.

“As part of the initiative, the students even educated villagers about child marriage, child labour, property rights for women, dowry harassment etc,,” the official said.

As informed by the students, the villagers were even unaware of accessing digital documents, like Aadhaar.

Speaking about the mandatory village adoption initiative, Vice Chancellor Dr Jayakara S M said that the initiative by the Law College was a great success and was lauded by the villagers.

“Considering the success, we have decided to extend the same to all 42 departments,” he said. 

The departments of the university would decide on the activities they should take up after adopting the villages.

“It could be cleanliness, sanitation, teaching English or any other subject at government schools, conducting art classes, importance of water, health schemes and other initiatives by the government etc,” he said.
