Three policemen have been suspended for inaction over the shocking incident involving stripping and beating up of minor boys at Hoskote near here.

.
Sub-inspector Dayananda and head constables Raju and Jayaramaiah of the Hoskote police station were suspended on Sunday, three days after a group of six men stripped and beat up three young boys on suspicion that they stole Rs 15,000 in cash and some batteries from an electric shop. The gang gave the boys electric shocks, took them to a eucalyptus grove where they stripped and beat them for more than four hours. The incident came to light on Saturday when the video of the incident went viral.

Around 11 pm on Thursday, the boys’ parents had gone to the police station to make a complaint, but they were asked to come back the next morning as it was “too late” to report the incident. The parents went to the police station on Friday and lodged the complaint. Though the police registered an assault case, they failed to conduct a proper enquiry into the incident, a senior police officer said.

“It was only after a video of the boys being beaten up went viral did they (policemen) understand the gravity of the case and slapped a case of kidnap and rioting and invoked the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso). Pocso was invoked as the victims are minor and were physically assaulted,” the officer said, adding that the policemen did not carry out their duty and failed to help the victims by registering the case under the appropriate sections. The three policemen will face an enquiry, he added.

V S Ugrappa, chairman of Karnataka Legislature Sub-Committee on Prevention of Violence and Sexual Abuse of Women and Children, visited the victims in Hoskote on Sunday, along with a few other members of the sub-committee.

One of the members told Deccan Herald, “We met the boys and their parents and got details of the incident. The boys took us to the place where they were assaulted, and recreated the scene for us. We also went to the police station and enquired about the investigation into the case, and asked them to quickly arrest the two absconding suspects.”

The member went on, “We learnt that one of the boys was dragged out of the government school but no one challenged the assaulters. The staff should have been alert and checked on the student who was forced out. It is the negligence of the school staff. The Block Education Officer (BEO) and the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) have been asked to conduct an enquiry and submit a report.”
